Project Description
FOUR PILLARS OF FAMILY LITERACY
PARENT
EDUCATION
Parent Education provides skill-building knowledge of the stages of child development and learning behaviors, increasing the parent’s capacity and confidence to be the child’s first teacher. Parents learn how to positively guide their children’s learning and increase their involvement in their child’s literacy and education. The facilitator introduces best practices for parents to connect and bond with their children through learning.
Parent Education also allows parents to build a social network by providing a safe place for parents to connect and bond with other parents, offering the opportunity to both give and receive support.
GOALS FOR PARENTS
Create an environment that appropriately encourages their child’s development
Identify expected behaviors for children at different ages so parents will have appropriate expectations
Communicate effectively with their child
Understand that discipline is teaching children how to make good choices, and utilize positive discipline options
Form a support network, giving parents a place to turn to find different options to try when they need support, encouragement or advice
Ask questions to stimulate the child’s own thinking and problem-solving
Influence their child’s environment by making sure the child has access to reading and writing materials and educational toys, limiting the amount of screen time, and modeling good reading habits
Frequently communicate with their child’s teacher
